Chester, PA – Today, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) announced Dyvne Lee, a 10th grader at Strath Haven High School, as the winner of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s 5th District. Her piece, “There will always be beauty in Brown Eyes,” will be sent to Washington D.C. to hang in the Capitol for one year.
“Art is a powerful platform for free expression and can be a moving source of hope or inspiration,” said Congresswoman Scanlon. “Each year, I look forward to this opportunity to view our community through the eyes of our student artists. I am once again overwhelmed by the creativity and honesty these incredible young artists pour into their work. I’m thrilled Dyvne’s stunning photograph will represent our community alongside hundreds of other pieces from around the country at the Capitol.”
“I want to thank the teachers who worked with us to spread the word about this opportunity to their students,” Congresswoman Scanlon continued. “I also want to extend a special thanks to our art competition judges Eric Thompson, Executive Director of Darlington Arts Center, and Nancy Markezin, Moderator of the Community Arts Center’s abstract studio workshop, for working with our office to select a winner.”
The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,000 high school students have been involved with the nationwide competition.
