Rep. Scanlon Announces 2021 Congressional App Challenge

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today encouraged youth in Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District to register for the 2021 Congressional App Challenge (CAC), an app competition for students in middle and high school. The CAC accepts apps written in any programming language, for any platform.

The Challenge’s submission portal is now open. Students are encouraged to register online by September 10, 2021, and all apps must be submitted by November 1, 2021. The competition is open to all students who meet the eligibility requirements, regardless of coding experience.

Rep. Scanlon strongly urges students of all skill levels to participate and learn how to create their own apps. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges drawn from the local community and honored by the Congresswoman at the end of the Challenge. Winning apps are also eligible to be featured on display in the U.S. Capitol building, on house.gov, and on the Congressional App Challenge website.

“The tech industry and other STEM-based sectors are spurring job growth in Southeastern Pennsylvania and across the country,” said Rep Scanlon. “It is critical that we help our young people develop the skills needed to compete in these areas so that they are prepared for the workforce of today — and tomorrow. These fields offer high-paying, high-demand jobs that can not only set up young Americans for successful careers, but also build wealth for them and their families. I hope the Congressional App Challenge can be a fun, low-barrier way for students in my district to begin exploring a future in STEM.”

The CAC was created because Congress recognized that STEM and computer-based skills are essential for economic growth and innovation and that the United States has been falling behind on these fronts. To maintain American competitiveness, it’s crucial that the U.S. invests in young people now and helps them acquire the valuable skills needed for positions in high-growth industries. The CAC encourages students to pursue those skills and recognizes them for their efforts.

Recognizing the racial, gender, and other disparities in the tech sector, the CAC also focuses on inclusivity and making the Challenge as accessible as possible to people from all backgrounds. Deliberate efforts will be made to include students from all backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in tech.
