Scanlon Announces Nearly $500,000 in Grants for Fire Departments in PA-05

Chester, PA – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today announced that seven local fire departments in Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District have been awarded a total of $494,992 in grant funding through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. This funding will be used to provide firefighters with improved National Fire Protection Association compliant tools and equipment as well as new state-of-the-art training programs.

“Firefighters have one of the toughest jobs in our community, and Pennsylvania fire companies are uniquely reliant on community volunteers and local funding,” said Rep. Scanlon. “Our local firefighters selflessly protect our families, homes, and businesses under extremely demanding, and often dangerous, circumstances. The AFG funding will ensure these brave men and women are properly equipped with the tools and resources they need to keep our community, and themselves, safe.”

The following Fire Departments will receive a grant from the AFG Program:

  • Glenolden Fire Company 1: $38,095
  • Brookhaven Fire Company #1: $49,904
  • Newtown Square Volunteer Fire Company 1: $141,740
  • Boothwyn Fire Company No. 1: $31,428
  • Middletown Fire Company No. 1: $46,190
  • Township of Upper Darby: $78,545
  • City of Chester: $109,090

The AFG program awards grants directly to fire departments and EMS organizations that are unaffiliated with a hospital to enhance their response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public and emergency response personnel with respect to fire and all other hazards.
