Chester, PA – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today issued the following statement about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine:

“The scenes we are seeing out of Ukraine are horrifying and heartbreaking. Families crowded into subway stations to take cover from missile attacks. Mortar shells strewn on city streets. Buildings damaged. A nation in pain.

“I join the international community in condemning Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified, and unlawful invasion of Ukraine. I stand in absolute solidarity with both the Ukrainian people and our own Ukrainian American community during this extremely difficult time.

“Make no mistake, Russia alone is responsible for the chaos that is unfolding. President Vladimir Putin has unleashed evil on the people of Ukraine — driven by his own delusion, ambition, and boundless hunger for power. 

“This is not a partisan issue — it is about democracy vs. autocracy. We must come together as a country to support our president and our allies in a united response to Russia’s aggression.

“I fully support President Biden's strong actions thus far. His rallying of the international community to oppose this lawless assault upon a free country by Putin is in line with what he promised: to repair relationships with our allies, to defend democracy, and to stop enabling Putin. The sanctions instituted already are having an immediate impact on the Russian economy, and the additional measures announced today are sure to ratchet up economic pressures.

“A tyrant like Putin will never be satisfied. He will continue his quest for power unless he is stopped in his tracks. The free world must now act decisively to ensure Putin and his cronies pay the full price for their malicious actions. 

“Authoritarianism cannot be tolerated. The world must make clear that further aggression towards Ukraine — or any sovereign nation — will result in the complete isolation of Russia from the global community and economy. It is also crucial that the United States and our allies take all necessary steps to support the Ukrainian government and people, including robust humanitarian aid and assistance for displaced people.

“Putin and those who support him in any manner will be judged harshly by history, but we cannot wait to shine a bright light on the horrors he is inflicting right now. The United States stands with the brave people of Ukraine, and we will remain steadfast in our support for them.”
