Scanlon Announces $96 Million for SEPTA from American Rescue Plan

Philadelphia, PA  Last Friday, March 4, 2022, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05)  joined Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), and SEPTA General Manager/CEO Leslie Richards to announce $96 million in new funding for the agency from the American Rescue Plan. The American Rescue Plan, passed in March 2021, provided relief to families, businesses, local governments, and others to help ease the burdens of the COVID-19 pandemic. The funding, awarded as a grant by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will support SEPTA operations to help get the agency back on track and recover from the pandemic.

“SEPTA — like other transit agencies across the country — saw ridership plummet when the pandemic forced people to work from home or adopt social distancing measures,” said Rep. Scanlon. “Lower ridership meant lost revenue and service cuts. When services are cut or delayed, it means our neighbors can’t complete their daily routines. They can’t get to work. They can’t get to school. They can’t get to their favorite restaurant or to see family and friends. As someone who used SEPTA to commute to school and work for more than 30 years, I’m pleased to announce this grant, made possible by the American Rescue Plan, which will help SEPTA maintain the safe, efficient service required for Southeastern Pennsylvania to get back to normal.”

American Rescue Plan Additional Assistance funding is being provided to transit agencies that demonstrate a need for additional financial support to cover expenses related to day-to-day operations, cleaning and sanitization, combating the spread of pathogens on transit systems, and retaining employees.
