Congresswoman Scanlon Votes to Invest in America’s Economic Independence and Lower Costs for Pennsylvania Families

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) this week voted to pass the CHIPS and Science Act, a bipartisan bill to lower costs for American families, end our dependence on foreign manufacturers instead of American-made semiconductors, and turbocharge American R&D to ensure our economic and national security for generations to come. An amendment led by Rep. Scanlon directs the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund five research-based STEM education hubs with the goal of recruiting more women and students of color to these fields. “Making more goods at home is crucial to lowering costs for Pennsylvania families, and our workforce has endless potential to compete globally in science and innovation,” said Rep. Scanlon. “It’s time to take bold action and provide the tools and resources needed to fulfill that potential by revitalizing federal support for the kinds of research and development initiatives that have long made the U.S. a beacon of excellence in science and innovation. Built from the ground up with rigorous support from the scientific community, this bill delivers on support for our supply chain and manufacturing efforts, lowering costs for Pennsylvania consumers and creating good-paying jobs that are here to stay.
