This morning, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon was confirmed to the prestigious House Judiciary Committee, following her appointment by the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. “We’ve seen our foundational values of fairness, civility and opportunity challenged in recent years," Congresswoman Scanlon said. "As a public interest lawyer, I’ve seen first-hand how this shift has impeded the access to justice for low-income families, communities of color, members of the LGBTQ community, immigrants and asylum seekers, and stacked the deck against the most vulnerable among us. We must fight to protect the rule of law and restore faith in our democratic institutions. I am honored to serve my constituents, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the American people on the House Judiciary Committee.” The House Judiciary Committee was established by the House of Representatives in 1813 to consider legislation relating to judicial proceedings. This Committee oversees not only civil and criminal judicial proceedings, but also issues relating to bankruptcy, espionage, terrorism, the protection of civil liberties, constitutional amendments, immigration and naturalization, claims against the United States, Presidential succession, antitrust law, revision and codification of the statutes of the United States, state and territorial boundary lines and patents, copyrights and trademarks. “I am proud to welcome Congresswoman Scanlon to the House Committee on the Judiciary,” Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said. “She brings with her nearly 35 years of experience as a public interest lawyer, where she has worked on issues central to the role and jurisdiction of our Committee. At such a critical time in our Nation’s history, I look forward to working with Congresswoman Scanlon as we continue the important work of the Judiciary Committee in fighting to protect the rule of law, strengthening our safety and security from enemies foreign and domestic, shielding Americans’ civil rights and civil liberties, and guaranteeing that all people, no matter their age, race, gender, religion, ability, finances, nationality, or sexual orientation, are treated fairly and equally.” Earlier this month, Congresswoman Scanlon was also appointed to the House Rules Committee, where she will guide the legislative agenda of the 116th Congress. ### |
