Congresswoman Scanlon Named Ranking Member of Constitution Subcommittee

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today announced her committee assignments for the 118th Congress. In addition to returning to the House Committee on Rules and the House Judiciary Committee, she is newly appointed to serve as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government in the 118th Congress.

"I came to Congress to protect our Democracy and safeguard the fundamental freedoms promised to all Americans," said Rep. Scanlon. "I’m honored to announce I will now be in the position to lead on that work in a new capacity as Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution. I will use the position to stand up to extremist attacks on our elections and voting rights, government institutions, and our right to safe and accessible reproductive health care. As always, I am committed to finding common ground wherever possible to solve problems for the American people, but I will never hesitate to stand up to extremism when it threatens our freedoms and undermines our values.”

“Congresswoman Scanlon has been a smart, hardworking, and invaluable member of our committee,”  said Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler. “As ranking member of the Constitution Subcommittee, Rep. Scanlon will be on the front lines of several crucial battles, including our fight to protect and expand voting rights and our ongoing work to restore abortion rights for all women. I’m excited to work with Rep. Scanlon as she leads our caucus on this important subcommittee in the 118th Congress.”

Formerly known as the Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government has jurisdiction over constitutional rights, constitutional amendments, federal civil rights, voting rights, claims against the United States, non-immigration private claims bills, ethics in government, tort liability, and other matters.

Rep. Scanlon is also returning to the House Committee on Rules, an appointment that gives Members significant ability to influence virtually all major legislation as it heads to the House Floor for a vote.

Rep. Scanlon continued, “I'm also honored to continue serving on the Rules Committee, where I have the opportunity to shape legislation before it goes to the floor to advance real solutions to the issues that matter most to families in PA-05 and across the country: lower costs, better-paying jobs, and safer communities.”

“Mary Gay is an extraordinary public servant, a powerful voice for Pennsylvania's 5th District in Congress, and a strong advocate for seniors, immigrants, and veterans,” said Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern. “She’s more than earned her reputation as a champion for children and families—and a principled leader who gets things done. I am thrilled to have her back on the committee, and I look forward to continuing our work together as House Democrats put people over politics and deliver for all Americans.”
