Congresswoman Scanlon Denounces Medication Abortion Court Decision

Chester, PA – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon released the following statement in response to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas’s ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA:

"With today’s ruling by a federal judge in Texas to undermine the FDA’s approval of mifepristone, Americans’ freedom to make reproductive health care decisions without government interference has sustained a serious blow. Extremist politicians and anti-abortion activists are weaponizing our court system to threaten women’s fundamental freedoms at both the state and national levels.

“Mifepristone is a medication that has been used safely and effectively in abortion care and other medical purposes across the country for the past 20 years. This unprecedented decision to revoke a drug that has proven safe and effective for decades undermines access to abortion care across the country – including here in PA-05. This judicial overreach also threatens the FDA’s essential authority over the drug approval process and could severely limit the development of new drugs. It will have far-reaching repercussions on patients’ access to FDA-approved medications.

“I will continue to stand up for the essential freedom of Americans to make personal decisions about our lives, our bodies, and our future, free from political interference."
