Chester, PA – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) is proud to announce Ezra Coleman, a 12th grader at Upper Darby High School, as the winner of the 2023 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District. Their piece, “Guardian of the Garlic Bread,” will be sent to Washington D.C. to hang in the Capitol for one year. “Art is a powerful platform for free expression and can be a moving source of hope or inspiration, which is why I am thrilled to have this opportunity each year to view our community through the eyes of our students,” said Rep. Scanlon. “Once again this year, I was overwhelmed by the creativity and honesty these incredible young artists poured into the 95 submissions our office received. I’m thrilled Ezra’s artwork will represent PA-05 alongside hundreds of other pieces from around the country at the Capitol for visitors to view throughout the year.” The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,00 high school students have been involved in the nationwide competition.
