Congresswoman Scanlon Issues Statement on Trump’s Third Criminal Indictment

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today issued the following statement in response to former President Donald Trump’s latest indictment on four new federal criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. “Once again, a grand jury of ordinary Americans has indicted former President Trump. There is nothing unprecedented about a grand jury handing down charges in an indictment of a public official when presented with evidence of criminal conduct. What is unprecedented is a former president of the United States engaging in concerted efforts to undermine our democracy’s most fundamental function and for elected officials to aid and abet, or ignore, those efforts. “When the election results were not in his favor, former President Trump rejected the rule of law — and the will of American voters. The latest indictment indicates that the former President conspired with others to attack our government – and democracy itself — by sowing chaos, confusion, and doubt among his supporters and orchestrating efforts to overturn election results that he knew were valid. These actions and months of incendiary rhetoric fueled the flames of hatred and lies that led to one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. “Former President Trump will get his day in court. That is how our criminal justice system works. But the continuing threat to our democracy lies with those who seek to deny or excuse his conduct and undermine our justice system’s ability to proceed free from political interference.” ### |
