Congresswoman Scanlon Announces Winner of 2024 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District

Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) is proud to announce Benjamin Mellinger, a Garnet Valley High School student, as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District. His piece, “Knuckles and Knots,” will be sent to Washington, D.C., to hang in the Capitol for one year.

“Each year, I have the wonderful opportunity to view our community through the eyes of our students during the annual Congressional Art Competition,” said Rep. Scanlon. “Our community’s young artists never fail to overwhelm me with their originality and imagination. I’m so excited that Benjamin’s artwork will represent PA-05 alongside hundreds of other pieces from around the country at the Capitol for visitors to view throughout the year. I also want to extend a special thank you to the dedicated teachers and volunteer judges who make this opportunity possible.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, over 650,00 high school students have been involved in the nationwide competition.
