Congresswoman Scanlon Statement on the 4th Anniversary of January 6th
Washington,
January 6, 2025
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today released the following statement to mark the fourth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol: “Four years ago, the world watched in horror as a mob incited by lies about the 2020 election attacked the Capitol and the very foundations of our constitutional republic. Neither the pristine blanket of snow that covers the Capitol today nor efforts to deny or rewrite facts can ever erase that stain upon our civic history. “On that day, the men and women of the Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police, and other first responders bore the brunt of the madness and lies that inspired the riot. They bravely defended our constitution, the Capitol, and all those who labor here for the American people. Many were gravely injured or permanently disabled. Some died as a result. It is shameful to ignore their sacrifice or pretend they did not come to the defense of our country against those seeking to violently invade the Capitol. “Much has changed in the intervening four years. Today, while many of us supported a different candidate, we certify the election of the person chosen by the American electorate. I joined my colleagues in the House in executing my Constitutional duty and with a strengthened resolve to uphold the rule of law, not just in certifying this election but in executing all of our responsibilities as members of Congress. “But on this fourth anniversary, we cannot help but be reminded that baseless claims of election fraud have consequences, just as do attacks upon the judiciary, the free press, political opponents, and other pillars of our constitutional order and democratic freedoms. Such attacks undermine faith and respect for our elections and our government. They erode the foundation of our constitutional republic, and, as we saw on January 6, 2021, they can all too easily give rise to political violence. “So, we all still have work to do to ensure that the lessons of history, and the facts, are not erased or forgotten. We will continue working to protect and preserve our bold American experiment to form a more perfect union.” ### |
