Congresswoman Scanlon Condemns Trump Tariffs as Stock Markets Tank and Prices Rise

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today released the following statement in response to the Trump administration's aggressive global tariff regime against imported goods from some of the United States’ closest allies.

“As President Trump escalates his costly trade war today, Pennsylvania businesses and working families are paying the price with higher taxes on everyday items like groceries, gas, electronics, cars, and homes.

“Our trade policies should put workers first and support our economic and national security interests. Alongside investments that grow the American economy and create good-paying union jobs, well-targeted tariffs are an important way to protect workers. That is not what the White House has done.

“The idea that imposing the highest sales tax increase in American history will strengthen our economy and lower prices is an outright lie. This new trade war escalation will not ‘liberate’ working people or businesses in America – it will handcuff them to Trump’s sinking economy.

“The President said he ‘couldn’t care less’ about the cost of his chaos on the American people — but I guarantee that working people care about sky-high prices, a crashing stock market, a looming recession, and the inability to plan and save for their futures.

“Tariffs are a tool in the toolbox, but they need to be used strategically to protect our workers and communities. We need economic policy that helps American families and Main Street, not handouts to billionaires and big business.”
