Scanlon Helps to Secure NDAA Wins For PA-5 Workers, Families, Federal Firefighters

Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon secured wins for PA-05 workers, families, and firefighters in the final Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). The FY 2021 NDAA passed the House Tuesday evening.

For the second year in a row, Congresswoman Scanlon protected over 4,000 jobs in her district by ensuring the FY21 NDAA included continued advanced procurement funding for the Chinook and Osprey program, which are built in the PA-5 Congressional District. Congresswoman Scanlon also worked with Congressman Donald Norcross to support a long sought alternative work schedule for federal firefighters which was included in this year’s NDAA.

“I am proud to join my colleagues in passing the FY21 NDAA which supports so many critical programs and jobs in our region, a direct investment in the families and workers who call our region home,” Congresswoman Scanlon said. “This bill continues to support the Chinook program which is built in our district, invests in our federal firefighters by adopting a better work schedule to meet the needs of their changing work, and provides a three percent pay increase for servicemembers and their families while making key investments in military infrastructure to support our troops overseas.”

Additional Scanlon Priorities Included in the FY 2021 NDAA:

  • Authorizes a 3 percent military pay raise, invests in housing improvements for military members and families and advances justice in safety with improvements to sexual assault prevention and response.
  • Expands paid parental leave for certain federal civilian employees inadvertently omitted from last year’s expansion of this benefit
  • Initiatives to combat the climate crisis, including cleaning up PFAS forever chemicals
  • Proactively strengthens our nation’s defenses to future pandemics, including a $1 billion Pandemic Preparedness and Resilience National Security Fund.
  • Requires DOD to identify and establish a process and change the names of military bases and infrastructure named for individuals who took up arms against America by serving in the Confederacy, with the process to be completed in one year.  Also prohibits the public display of the Confederate flag on Department of Defense installations.
