Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05) today was named as a member of the conference committee for the America COMPETES Act by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. As a member of the committee, Scanlon will be part of the negotiation team with the Senate over the House’s America COMPETES Act of 2022, which makes crucial investments in the production of semiconductor chips, strengthening supply chains, and bolstering research and development.
“Today, we take another step toward sending to the president’s desk a bipartisan, bicameral package to lower costs at home, make more goods in America, and turbocharge our competitiveness in the world,” Speaker Pelosi said. “America has long led the world in innovation and technology. Thanks to the leadership of Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, the House strengthens our preeminence with our America COMPETES Act: a data-driven, results-oriented package to lift up American families, workers, and businesses.”
“I am honored Speaker Pelosi asked me to serve on the conference committee for this crucial legislation that will strengthen America’s economy and make our nation more competitive,” said Rep. Scanlon. “The America COMPETES Act addresses short and long-term supply chain issues and makes long-overdue investments in our nation’s research and development institutions — laying the groundwork for the United States to lead the world in advancements in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, computing, and biomedical research. I look forward to working with my colleagues from the House and Senate to deliver a final bill that will pass both chambers and make its way to President Biden’s desk so we can ensure America is well-positioned to outcompete any nation around the globe. Together, we will lower inflation, promote domestic manufacturing, bring jobs back to the United States, and insulate our economy from future supply chain disruptions.”
The House-passed America COMPETES Act currently includes two amendments that Scanlon offered to help shape the legislation. One provides grants to institutions of higher education to create innovative, research-focused education centers for STEM students. The other allows cities like Philadelphia to compete for investments in the Regional Technology and Innovation Hub Program, which funds jobs and training opportunities in R&D, tech, and manufacturing.
