Congresswoman Scanlon Elected as Vice Chair of House Judiciary Committee

Today, Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon was elected by her colleagues as the Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee.

“I am beyond proud to have been named to the Judiciary Committee and so honored to have been elected as Vice Chair,” Congresswoman Scanlon said. “Now more than ever, we must work to restore faith in our Democratic institutions and I am fully committed to continuing the work necessary to protect access to justice, the sanctity and fairness of our elections, and the rule of law.”

In addition to this selection, Congresswoman Scanlon will also serve on the following Judiciary Subcommittees: Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law; Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties; Immigration and Citizenship.

“Congresswoman Scanlon was selected unanimously by her colleagues to continue her commitment to the rule of law and justice as Vice Chair of the House Judiciary Committee,” Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said. “She brings with her nearly 35 years of experience as a public interest lawyer, where she has worked on issues central to the role and jurisdiction of our Committee. I’m honored to serve alongside her and look forward to working with her at this critical time in our nation’s history.”

The House Judiciary Committee was established by the House of Representatives in 1813 to consider legislation relating to judicial proceedings. This Committee oversees not only civil and criminal judicial proceedings, but also issues relating to bankruptcy, espionage, terrorism, the protection of civil liberties, constitutional amendments, immigration and naturalization, claims against the United States, Presidential succession, antitrust law, revision and codification of the statutes of the United States, state and territorial boundary lines and patents, copyrights and trademarks.

Earlier this month, Congresswoman Scanlon was also appointed to the House Rules Committee, where she will help guide the legislative agenda of the 116th Congress.
